Black History Month began as Negro History Week in February of 1926. Carter Godwin Woodson decided to capitalize on the second week in February because it was already set aside in the Black community to celebrate the lives and birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson felt is was necessary for Black citizens to break free of the indoctrination that Blacks were an inferior people, insignificant to world history, and incapable of making positive contributions to society.
The enthusiasm for Black History Week built and in 1969, a group of students from Kent State University began celebrations for Black History Month, hosting many celebrations in their Kuumba House. In 1976, President Ford publicly endorsed Black History Month and encouraged the nation to honor the accomplishments of Black Americans.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was only 39 years old when he paid the ultimate price for serving his community. At least a quarter of his life was dedicated to leading the community to the Promised Land. This January 17th, we ask that you continue in his legacy and find a way to serve the community at large.
MLK once said, "Everybody can be great because Everybody can Serve".
Go out and be Great!!!
There are many different beliefs regarding how to best protect ourselves from the spread of the "Rona". Whatever your belief, we agree that we do not want to be the cause of sickness ravaging our community. If you don't want the shot, at least wear your mask around others, if you don't want to wear a mask, keep your distance from the community's most vulnerable. Do it for the community!
